Cycle Racks

Cycle Racks are an ideal solution for storing push bikes; these come in various styles and finishing’s.

Styles

Sub fix single cycle racks are commonly called the Sheffield Stand, these are designed to be ‘dug in’ or sub fix.  We would not recommend that individual cycle stands are fitted with a base plate; these invariably come loose over time.

These are normally used outside of a public building such a library or doctors surgery.

You then have cycle racks that hold up to 10 bikes, these are commonly known as ‘toast racks’ simply because of their looks.  These cycle racks can be bolted down to a good concrete base but again ‘digging in’ is always the best option.

Finishes

All cycle racks should be Galvanised as a minimum requirement, as in most cases is all you need.  Your cycle rack can be Galvanised & Polyester Powder-Coated but this tends to be an unnecessary expense.

Again for the single Sheffield cycle rack, to be used outside of libraries, these are more often than not stainless steel.

The common sizes of cycle racks are 800 x 800 for the Sheffield Stands and using the same size hoops for 5 hoops a cycle rack to hold 10 bikes would be 3.5m long.  These ‘toast rack’ style cycle racks are set at 800mm apart; however, some council do like a larger space and the BREAAM requirements ‘prefer’ 1m.  However, this is not normally feasible particularly where a large number of cycle racks are required.

Here at Shelter-Solutions we always recommend our bar style cycle racks in our cycle shelters, as they are not fastened the ground you never have the common problem of litter collecting and the racks coming loose over time.  Again an inherent problem with cycle racks, for which there is no answer.  For more details of our bar range, see our extensive range of cycle shelters.
